The North Gonja District Directorate of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) has engaged students of selected basic schools in the district as part of activities marking the 2026 Annual Citizenship Week Celebration.
The engagement, held on 5th June 2026, was organized under the theme, “Upholding Our Constitution in the Digital Age: Our Collective Responsibility.” It sought to educate students on their civic responsibilities, the importance of upholding the 1992 Constitution, and the need to use digital platforms responsibly.
Schools visited during the exercise included Markazia JHS, Asafo JHS, Wasipe JHS, and D/A JHS.
Leading the engagements, the District Programme Officer, Mr. Buhari Hafiz, educated students and teachers on the significance of the 1992 Constitution, citizens’ rights and responsibilities, respect for the rule of law, and the role of young people in safeguarding Ghana’s democracy.
Mr. Hafiz explained that while digital technology has created opportunities for learning, communication and civic participation, it also presents challenges that require responsible conduct. He urged the students to be mindful of their activities online and to use digital platforms in ways that promote peace, tolerance and national development.
He further educated the students on responsible digital citizenship, emphasizing the need to verify information before sharing it online, avoid misinformation and disinformation, reject hate speech, and refrain from engaging in any form of online abuse. He encouraged them to think critically about the content they consume and share on social media.
Mr. Hafiz also reminded the students that rights come with responsibilities and that the freedoms guaranteed by the Constitution must be exercised with respect for the rights and dignity of others. He encouraged them to become ambassadors of constitutional values in their schools and communities and to contribute positively to Ghana's democratic development.
The interactive sessions provided an opportunity for students to ask questions and share their views on issues relating to digital technology, citizenship and democratic participation.
The Citizenship Week Celebration was successfully carried out in the selected schools and helped to deepen students’ understanding of constitutional governance and their responsibilities as future leaders.
The NCCE North Gonja District Directorate reaffirmed its commitment to promoting civic education and nurturing responsible citizens for national development.
