The Northern Regional Office of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) has engaged students of the Tamale School of Hygiene on responsible digital citizenship as part of the Commission’s 2026 Constitution Week celebrations.
Held on May 21, 2026, at the school auditorium, the programme was organized under the theme, “Upholding the Constitution in a Digital Age, Our Collective Responsibility.”
More than 100 students, including members of the school’s Civic Education Club, participated in the engagement. Discussions focused on the relevance of Ghana’s 1992 Constitution in addressing modern digital challenges such as misinformation, disinformation, fake news, and the responsible use of social media.
Speaking during the programme, the Assistant Director and Head of Programmes at the Northern Regional Office of the NCCE, Mr. Suguru Duut, said the Constitution was not meant only for politicians but for every Ghanaian, including citizens who engage on digital platforms.
He explained that the freedoms guaranteed under Article 21 of the Constitution, particularly freedom of speech and expression, must be exercised responsibly in line with Article 41, which enjoins citizens to respect the rights of others and promote national well-being.
Mr. Duut noted that social media platforms have become important spaces for public engagement and cautioned students to think carefully before posting or sharing information online.
He further warned against the circulation of unverified health information and political rumours, stressing that such actions could undermine public trust and national cohesion.
Students were also taken through Ghana’s political history and educated on the importance of the Fourth Republican Constitution and the role citizens must play in defending it against abuse and violations.
NCCE officers further advised the students to be patriotic and law-abiding citizens by adhering to school regulations and the laws of Ghana.
The Patron of the NCCE Civic Education Club, Mr. Mohammed Saani, commended the Commission for the educational engagement and encouraged students to become responsible digital citizens by verifying information before sharing it online.
