NCCE KWABRE EAST OFFICIALS EDUCATES A SECTION OF THE PUBLIC ON ENVIRONMENTAL GOVERNANCE AT ABOASO

The Kwabre East office of the NCCE, after a successful orientation with students of Gyaamah Pensah Senior High Technical School on Responsible Citizenship & Suitable Digital Practices, capitalised on the opportunity and had a similar engagement with identifiable groups in Aboaso township. They sensitised them on sanitation practices and Environmental Governance.

The activity mainly targeted dressmakers, food vendors, hairdressers/barbers, shops, and customers as the core beneficiaries of the spontaneous initiative. They also took them through NCCE’s constitutional mandate and the major role it plays in consolidating Ghana’s Democracy.

As a measure in implementing this activity, prompt actions and awareness were created among participants to duly protect and safeguard the environment, with main emphasis on the theme: Ending Plastic Pollution.

With regard to this, calls were made to participants, community leaders, and the general public at large to take bold and collective action to combat plastic pollution through the principles of the 3Rs, thus: Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle.

The main purpose of this initiative was to empower the participants and the members of the community as champions of environmental stewardship.

Participants were also generally made to understand the magnitude of the dangers Plastic pollution poses to our environment by citing the various health risks, economic burdens, and the level of Environmental Degradation it causes.

Not only was the emphasis on ending plastic waste, but Sadiya Baba Sali and Mary Tiwaa seamlessly engaged beneficiaries on best sanitation and hygienic practices that can be adopted to safeguard the environment and also enhance the safety and wellbeing of individuals, such as proper disposal of waste, regular cleaning of homes & environment, de-silting of choked gutters / sewage or drain paths, avoiding deforestation, illegal mining, sand winning and all forms of pollution, among others.

The activity actually set the tone for the urgent need to enhance Environmental Safety and the necessary measures or strategies that can be adopted to control and end Plastic Pollution and maintain good sanitation principles, as the Government of Ghana seeks to ban the use of Styrofoam Plastic Bags / Materials effective 1st January, 2027.

In all, the engagement was very successful and, remarkably, the participants declared their support in protecting the environment through adopting preventive measures in ending Plastic Pollution and enhance environmental governance.
