Students from Abetifi Kyemase Technical Institute and Abirem Technical Institute joined district officials, environmental stakeholders, and civic educators on Friday, June 5, 2026, to commemorate World Environment Day through a climate action education programme and tree-planting exercise at the Abetifi Kyemase Technical Institute.
The event was held under the theme “Climate Action” and the slogan “Inspired by Nature. For Climate. For Our Future,” with the aim of promoting environmental stewardship and encouraging young people to become active participants in efforts to protect the environment and address climate change.
Present at the programme were the District Chief Executive for Kwahu East, Hon. Samuel Asamoah; the Coordinating Director of the Kwahu East District Assembly (KEDA), Mr. Kwadwo Buor Gyamfi; management and staff of the Kwahu East District Assembly; representatives of the Forestry Commission; personnel of the Ghana Police Service; management and staff of Abetifi Kyemase Technical Institute; and officers of the National Commission for Civic Education.
Addressing participants, the District Director of the Abetifi NCCE office Ms. Roberta E. Koah, highlighted the urgent need for climate action in the face of increasing environmental challenges. She noted that climate change continues to affect communities through changing weather patterns, environmental degradation, deforestation, and other human activities that threaten sustainable development.
She stressed that environmental protection is not the responsibility of governments alone but requires the active involvement of every citizen. According to her, Article 41(k) of the 1992 Constitution places a duty on all citizens to protect and safeguard the environment, making environmental stewardship both a civic responsibility and a national obligation.
As part of the commemoration, dignitaries and participants planted Muntari species tree seedlings on the school compound as a symbol of their commitment to environmental sustainability and climate resilience. The exercise also demonstrated the importance of collective action in addressing environmental challenges and safeguarding natural resources for future generations.
Students were educated on the causes and effects of climate change, the importance of protecting biodiversity, and the role of young people in promoting sustainable development. Participants were urged to serve as ambassadors for climate action by sharing knowledge acquired during the programme with their peers, families, and communities.
The observance provided an opportunity to reinforce awareness of environmental rights and responsibilities while encouraging practical actions that support climate resilience. It also highlighted the critical role that educational institutions, public agencies, and local communities can play in promoting environmental citizenship and sustainable development.
The programme ended with a call on all stakeholders to remain committed to protecting the environment and working collectively to build a greener, cleaner, and more sustainable future for all.
