VOTE BUYING IN POLITICS IS THE GREATEST FACTOR UNDERMINING OUR DEMOCRACY

The Asunafo North Municipal Office of NCCE, Ahafo region, undertook a sensitization programme on Harmers Radio in Goaso on the theme, Together we can build Ghana, so get involved. The purpose of the programme was to highlight the major activities the Office has outlined for the year.

Mr. Harris Quansah, the Officer-in-Charge, appreciated the free airtime given to the NCCE and also thanked the Media House for the opportunity. He highlighted the presentation made by the Chairman of the NCCE on 8th January 2024. He said, “This year is an election year and it presents an arduous task of actively educating citizens on their rights and responsibilities, so they can make informed decisions during elections”. He cited Article 21(1a, c, e, 3); Article 35(9), and Article 55(2) of the 1992 Constitution which grants legal right and opportunity to every Ghanaian aged 18 years and above to join any religion, association or political party of his or her choice without any discrimination. He stressed that our Constitution promotes religious and political tolerance which in effect brings peace and stability to our dear nation.

Mr. Harris Quansah discussed vote buying as the greatest factor undermining our democracy. He said people should not allow money to influence them to make the wrong decision. They need to weigh the messages being offered to them and make informed and right choices. This will help us to elect the right leaders and also reduce corruption. He also reminded the media to be cautious about fake news since that can also trigger tension in this year’s election.
