NCCE Old Tafo Municipal Directorate Urges Uthmaniya SHS Students to Embrace Civic Responsibility and Discipline

A call for young people to see responsible citizenship as a daily practice, rather than a duty reserved for adulthood, took centre stage when the Old Tafo Municipal Directorate of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) engaged first-year students of Uthmaniya Islamic Senior High School during their orientation programme.

The engagement formed part of the Directorate's efforts to introduce students to the civic values expected of them as they begin senior high school. It focused on the duties of citizens, discipline, respect for the rule of law, and the importance of contributing positively to their school communities and the country.

Addressing the students, the Old Tafo Municipal Director of the NCCE, Mr. Suraka Saani, encouraged them to recognise that citizenship involves more than enjoying rights. He explained that responsibilities such as obeying lawful rules, respecting others, and acting with integrity contribute to peaceful coexistence and national development.

Mr. Saani stressed that the habits students develop during their formative years could shape how they approach public life in the future. He urged the freshmen to regard discipline as an essential part of their education, demonstrating it through punctuality, respect for school authorities, commitment to their studies, and consideration for fellow students.

The Municipal Director further reminded the gathering that the rule of law provides a foundation for an orderly society, and that young people have a role to play in sustaining it. He encouraged the students to resolve differences responsibly, avoid conduct that undermines school regulations, and understand that their choices can affect both their personal prospects and the well-being of those around them.

Patriotism also featured in the discussion, with Mr. Saani encouraging the students to express their commitment to Ghana through practical actions. He emphasised that contributing to national progress begins with everyday decisions, including taking academic work seriously, treating others fairly, and accepting responsibility for one's conduct.

The interaction took place in the presence of the school's Assistant Headmaster and Heads of Department, reflecting the school's support for civic education as part of its orientation activities. Their participation reinforced the connection between classroom learning, character development, and the values that support a responsible school community.

By reaching students at the beginning of their senior high school education, the Old Tafo Municipal Directorate seeks to encourage positive habits that will guide their conduct beyond the classroom. The engagement reinforced the NCCE's commitment to promoting civic knowledge, patriotism, and responsible citizenship, while reminding the freshmen that their contribution to Ghana's development can begin within the school environment.
