The 2026 Citizenship Week Celebration in Sunyani West Municipality has taken a forward-looking turn as the Commission's Office in the Municipality has engaged students of Odomase Methodist Junior High School.
The event, anchored on the sub-theme “Growing Up Digital: The Ghanaian Child Upholding the Constitution Online", highlighted civic duties beyond the traditional sense, as the discussion focused on the digital environment as a new frontier for citizenship.
An Assistant Civic Education Officer, Abdul Mumuni Suguru, explained that the principles of the 1992 Constitution must extend into cyberspace, where young people increasingly spend their time. He urged the students to see themselves as digital citizens whose online actions can either strengthen or weaken Ghana’s democratic culture.
Mr. Suguru also cautioned against cyberbullying, misinformation, and other harmful practices that erode trust and unity, stressing that responsible online behaviour is a constitutional obligation. He encouraged them to use digital platforms to promote respect, tolerance, and truth, thereby contributing to national cohesion.
The young learners responded with enthusiasm, demonstrating awareness of how their online conduct connects to broader civic responsibilities. Their participation reflected a growing recognition that safeguarding democracy in the digital age requires vigilance from even the younger citizens.
