The Western Regional Director of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), Mr. Andrews Ofori Larbi, has urged citizens to declare their income honestly and pay their taxes promptly, describing tax compliance as an important foundation for national development.
Mr. Ofori Larbi made the call during a sensitisation engagement with the congregation of the Salvation Army Church in Sekondi on the theme, “Prompt Payment of Little Taxes Builds a Great Nation.” He based his message on Article 41(j) of the 1992 Constitution, which requires citizens to declare their income honestly to the appropriate lawful agencies and fulfil their tax obligations.
He explained that although the Constitution guarantees fundamental rights and freedoms, citizens also have corresponding responsibilities to contribute to the development of the state. According to him, taxes, regardless of their size, collectively provide the resources needed to finance essential public goods and services such as roads, healthcare, education, security and other social amenities.
Mr. Ofori Larbi encouraged the congregants not to underestimate the impact of regular and honest tax payment, noting that national development depends not only on large corporate tax contributions but also on the collective commitment of individuals to fulfil their civic obligations. He further urged them to regard responsible citizenship as an extension of their faith and to lead by example within their homes and communities by declaring their income truthfully and avoiding tax evasion.
The sensitisation formed part of the NCCE’s ongoing civic education activities in the Western Region aimed at deepening public understanding of constitutional duties, promoting responsible citizenship and encouraging voluntary compliance with tax laws to support domestic revenue mobilisation.
