NCCE Kwahu East and Social Welfare Department Call for Action Against Child Labour at Nkawkaw

The Kwahu East District Office of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), in collaboration with the Social Welfare Department, has called for collective action to eliminate child labour during a radio discussion held ahead of the 2026 World Day Against Child Labour.

The discussion was aired from 8:45 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday, June 10, 2026, on Republic FM 97.5 at Nkawkaw. The engagement formed part of activities marking the 2026 World Day Against Child Labour, observed annually on June 12. It provided an opportunity to educate the public on the causes, effects and prevention of child labour, as well as the roles individuals and institutions can play in protecting children from exploitation.

Representing the NCCE, Ms. Roberta Essilfuah Koah emphasized that the fight against child labour is not the responsibility of government alone but a shared responsibility of all social actors and members of society. She urged parents, guardians, teachers, traditional authorities, religious leaders, civil society organizations and community members to work together to ensure that children enjoy their rights to education, protection and development.

She noted that the 1992 Constitution of Ghana guarantees the rights of children and obliges the State and citizens to protect their welfare, while the Children’s Act, 1998 (Act 560), prohibits exploitative child labour and provides safeguards for the protection and development of children. She therefore called on all stakeholders to remain vigilant and support efforts aimed at safeguarding children from all forms of exploitation.

Assistant Development Officers of the Social Welfare Department, Ms. Phoebe Dankwah and Ms. Christiana Boateng, also participated in the discussion. They highlighted the various forms of child labour, its negative consequences on children’s physical, mental and educational development, and the legal frameworks available to protect children in Ghana.

The panellists encouraged members of the public to report cases of child labour and child abuse to the appropriate authorities and stressed the importance of community involvement in protecting the rights and welfare of children.
