NCCE calls for independent funding to strengthen civic education

The National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) is calling for the establishment of an independent funding mechanism to sustain its civic education activities across the country.

The Deputy Chairman in charge of Operations at the NCCE, Samuel Akuamoah, says the Commission’s dependence on government funding makes it difficult to sustain effective civic education and outreach programmes.

Speaking at a media engagement with officials of the NCCE on Thursday, August 27, 2026, on the theme “Strengthening Civic Education through Strategic Partnerships,” Mr. Akuamoah appealed to Parliament to support the creation of an independent funding organisation for the Commission.

He said political leadership, regardless of the government in power, may find it difficult to adequately fund the NCCE because effective civic education can work against political actors who seek to exploit gaps in public knowledge.

“The better way out is to get us an independent funding organisation. Without that, I don’t think the political leadership of this country, no matter which government is in power, can fund this organisation called NCCE,” he said.

Mr. Akuamoah noted that politicians could feel disadvantaged when the Commission effectively carries out its mandate, particularly in educating citizens on their rights and responsibilities and promoting accountability.

He therefore urged Parliament to take steps to provide the NCCE with a sustainable and independent source of funding to enable it to expand its outreach programmes.

He also acknowledged the critical role of the media in advancing the Commission’s civic education mandate and called for stronger collaboration between the NCCE and media organisations.

According to him, the Commission is committed to reinforcing existing partnerships and implementing proposals discussed during the engagement.

Mr. Akuamoah said the NCCE would also review some of its existing practices and approaches to ensure that partnerships with stakeholders produce meaningful outcomes for the country.

He stressed that the ultimate objective of the collaboration should be to advance the interests of Ghana rather than those of the NCCE alone.

“We believe that whatever we do in partnership will inure to the benefit of Mother Ghana, not only the NCCE,” he said.
