As part of activities marking the 2026 Citizenship Week Celebration, the Kwaebibirem Municipal Directorate of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) utilized the airwaves to promote responsible citizenship, digital responsibility, and environmental stewardship among young people and the general public.
On Thursday, 5th June 2026, the Municipal Director, Mr. Hillary Ohene, and the Assistant Civic Education Officer, Mr. Edward Opare, represented the Commission in a live radio discussion on Abibirem FM 93.1. The programme, hosted by Prof. Kay also featured four students and two teachers from Kade Presbyterian Junior High School.
The discussion formed part of the Commission's efforts to deepen public understanding of the objectives of Citizenship Week and its relevance in nurturing responsible and civic-minded young citizens. Participants discussed the national theme, “Upholding Our Constitutional Duties at Our Age,” and the sub-theme, “Growing Up Digital: The Ghanaian Child Upholding the Constitution Online.”
Addressing listeners, the NCCE officials explained the significance of Citizenship Week and highlighted the importance of helping children and young people understand their rights, responsibilities, and obligations as citizens of Ghana. They emphasized that citizenship is not only about enjoying rights and freedoms but also about fulfilling civic responsibilities in accordance with the 1992 Constitution.
Transitioning to the digital aspect of citizenship, the resource persons educated listeners on the opportunities and challenges associated with the increasing use of social media and digital platforms by young people. They stressed the importance of responsible online behavior and encouraged students to think critically before sharing content on the internet.
Particular emphasis was placed on the need for young people to avoid posting or sharing content that could damage their reputation, violate the rights of others, spread misinformation, or undermine societal values. The speakers reminded students that their digital footprints can have lasting consequences and therefore urged them to uphold constitutional values both online and offline.
To make the discussion more interactive, questions were posed to the students to assess their understanding of responsible digital behavior. The students demonstrated an appreciable level of awareness regarding online safety, while the teachers supplemented the discussion by sharing practical guidance on digital citizenship, respect, and responsible conduct in the digital space.
In addition to discussions on Citizenship Week, the programme also focused on the observance of World Environment Day 2026. Participants used the platform to educate listeners on the importance of environmental conservation and sustainable environmental practices.
The discussion highlighted the critical role trees play in supporting life and maintaining ecological balance. Listeners were reminded of the many benefits derived from trees, including the provision of oxygen, medicine, food, shade, shelter, and protection against environmental degradation. Participants were therefore encouraged to cultivate positive environmental habits, including tree planting and nurturing, to help replace trees that are cut down and preserve the country's natural resources.
The speakers further stressed the need for collective action in protecting the environment and preventing the extinction of valuable tree species. They noted that environmental conservation is essential for sustainable development and the well-being of future generations.
The programme also provided an opportunity to celebrate the achievements of the students of Kade Presbyterian Junior High School for emerging winners of the 2026 Independence Day Constitution Quiz Competition. Their success was commended as a reflection of their commitment to civic education and constitutional literacy.
Furthermore, appreciation was extended to the management and staff of Abibirem FM for providing a platform that enabled students to participate in a live radio discussion. For many of the students, it was their first experience in a radio studio, making the programme both educational and memorable.
The radio discussion successfully enhanced public awareness of responsible citizenship, constitutional duties, responsible social media usage, and environmental conservation, while also demonstrating the important role young people can play in promoting national development and democratic values.
