Yendi Municipal Director of NCCE Pays Courtesy Call on Mion Chief, Naa Alhassan Mahama II

The Municipal Director of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) in Yendi, Mr. Osman Kassim, has paid a courtesy call on the Paramount Chief of the Mion Traditional Area, Mionlana Alhassan Mahama II, at his temporary residence in Yendi.

The visit was aimed at formally introducing the Yendi Municipal Office of the NCCE to the Paramount Chief, briefing him on the Commission’s mandate and activities within the municipality, and seeking his support and blessings for the effective implementation of civic education programmes. Mionlana Alhassan Mahama II currently occupies one of the traditional gateway skins to the Yendi Skin, a position of significance within Dagbon’s customary system.

During the meeting, Mr. Kassim explained the mandate of the NCCE under Article 231 of the 1992 Constitution and the National Commission for Civic Education Act, 1993 (Act 452). He noted that the Commission is mandated to create and sustain awareness of the Constitution, educate citizens on their civic rights and responsibilities, and promote constitutionalism, democracy, peace and responsible citizenship.

Mr. Kassim also highlighted some of the civic education activities undertaken by the Yendi Municipal Office, including engagements with traditional authorities, schools, religious organisations, youth groups, community members, media organisations and other stakeholders. He stressed the important role of traditional authorities in promoting peace, social cohesion, responsible citizenship and community development.

He appealed to Mionlana Alhassan Mahama II to continue supporting the work of the NCCE and to use his influence to encourage citizens to respect the rule of law, uphold peaceful coexistence and participate responsibly in democratic governance.

In his remarks, Mionlana Alhassan Mahama II expressed appreciation to the NCCE for the visit and commended the Commission for its contribution to civic education, peace and social harmony. He encouraged the NCCE to intensify programmes aimed at educating citizens on their constitutional rights and responsibilities, tolerance, peaceful coexistence and respect for traditional and national institutions.

Mionlana Alhassan Mahama II assured the Municipal Director of his support and cooperation and expressed the hope that the NCCE would continue to engage traditional authorities and other stakeholders in promoting peace and responsible citizenship in Yendi and beyond.
