NCCE Yendi Engages SDA JHS and Islamic No. 1 JHS Pupils on Responsible Digital Citizenship

The Yendi Municipal Directorate of the National Commission for Civic Education has intensified its 2026 Citizenship Week Celebration with civic education engagements for pupils of SDA Junior High School and Islamic No. 1 Junior High School in Yendi.

The engagements were held on 3rd June 2026 under the national theme, “Upholding Our Constitution in a Digital Age: Our Collective Responsibility,” and the sub-theme, “Growing Up Digital: The Ghanaian Child Upholding the Constitution Online.” The programme sought to educate pupils on responsible citizenship, constitutional values, and safe online behaviour in an increasingly digital world.

Addressing the pupils, the Yendi Municipal Director of the NCCE, Mr. Osman Kassim, explained the rationale behind the annual Citizenship Week Celebration. He noted that the initiative is designed to instil civic values, patriotism, constitutional awareness, and responsible citizenship among school children, who represent the future leaders of Ghana.

Mr. Kassim said the digital age offers many opportunities for learning, communication, innovation, and personal development. He, however, reminded the pupils that the use of digital platforms comes with responsibilities and must be guided by discipline, respect, truthfulness, and the values of the 1992 Constitution.

He stressed the need for every Ghanaian child to uphold values such as honesty, tolerance, respect for others, patriotism, obedience to lawful authority, and peaceful coexistence. According to him, good citizenship should be reflected not only in physical interactions, but also in how young people conduct themselves online.

The Municipal Director cautioned the pupils against harmful online activities and highlighted some cyber-related threats affecting young people, including sextortion, cyberbullying, misinformation, disinformation, online impersonation, hate speech, and internet fraud. He noted that the spread of false information and irresponsible online conduct could undermine social cohesion, peace, and national development.

Mr. Kassim advised the pupils to think carefully before sharing information on social media, verify content from credible sources, protect their personal data, and avoid engaging with suspicious persons online. He further encouraged them to report abusive or unsafe online behaviour to parents, teachers, or trusted adults.

He also urged the pupils to become ambassadors of positive change by promoting peace, respect, responsible digital conduct, and constitutional values among their peers. He reminded them that while the Constitution guarantees rights and freedoms, it also places responsibilities on citizens to respect the rights of others and contribute positively to society.

The pupils actively participated in the discussions by asking questions and sharing experiences relating to the use of social media and the internet. The sessions concluded with a call on all students to uphold the values enshrined in the Constitution and use digital technology responsibly for personal growth, national development, and the promotion of democratic governance.
