NCCE Yendi Engages Muslim Community on the Dangers of Drug Abuse Among the Youth

For many young people, drug abuse can begin with curiosity, peer pressure, or a desire to experiment, but its consequences can extend far beyond the first decision to use a substance. Against this backdrop, the NCCE Yendi Municipal Office has engaged members of the Muslim community in Yendi and surrounding communities on the dangers of drug abuse and its impact on the lives of young people.

The engagement, held at the forecourt of the former Member of Parliament for the Yendi Constituency, Alhaji Farouk Aliu Mahama, formed part of activities marking the annual Mualid celebration of the Tijaniyya Muslim Community.

Addressing the gathering, an Assistant Civic Education Officer at the NCCE Yendi Municipal Office, Mr. Yakubu Mohammed Baba, educated participants on the harmful effects of drug abuse, particularly among the youth.

Mr. Yakubu cautioned young people against the use and abuse of drugs, explaining that substance abuse could have serious consequences for their physical and mental well-being. He noted that it could also affect their education, employment opportunities and future prospects.

Beyond its impact on individuals, he pointed out that drug abuse could contribute to crime, violence, road accidents, family problems and other social challenges that threaten peace, security and development within communities.

In view of these concerns, Mr. Yakubu called on parents, religious leaders, traditional and community leaders, as well as other stakeholders, to take an active role in educating, guiding and supporting young people to make responsible choices.

He further encouraged young people who may already be struggling with substance abuse to seek appropriate help rather than conceal their challenges. According to him, early intervention, guidance and community support are important in helping affected persons overcome substance abuse and rebuild their lives.

Mr. Yakubu also urged the Muslim community to draw on religious teachings and existing community structures to promote discipline, responsible behavior, peaceful coexistence and healthy lifestyles among the youth.

The engagement forms part of the NCCE’s civic education efforts to strengthen community participation in addressing social challenges and promote responsible citizenship, particularly among young people.
