NCCE, Tree Growers Association Mark World Environment Day with Tree Planting Exercise at Nyimati Basic School

The Sissala West District Office of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), in collaboration with the Sissala West District Tree Growers Association, commemorated the 2026 World Environment Day with a tree planting exercise at Nyimati Basic School.

The initiative was aimed at promoting environmental conservation, creating awareness about environmental protection, and encouraging pupils to cultivate the habit of planting and protecting trees as a practical way of combating climate change and environmental degradation.

Addressing the pupils during the exercise, the Sissala West District Director of the NCCE, Mr. Mustapha Iddrisu, highlighted the significance of World Environment Day and stressed the need for collective responsibility in protecting the environment. He explained that safeguarding the environment is a constitutional duty of every citizen as provided under Article 41 of the 1992 Constitution of Ghana. He also encouraged members of the community to adopt good sanitation practices to help maintain a clean and healthy environment.

The Chairman of the Sissala West District Tree Growers Association, Mr. Babia Fuseine Yahaya, educated the pupils on the numerous benefits of trees, including their role in improving air quality, preventing soil erosion, and providing shade. He also demonstrated the process of nursing cashew seedlings and encouraged every pupil to plant at least one tree at home and another in school before the end of the year.

Following the educational session, the pupils participated in a practical demonstration on the proper techniques for transplanting seedlings. Fourteen (14) cashew seedlings were planted around the school compound as part of the exercise.

To further support the school's environmental efforts, Mr. Babia Fuseine Yahaya pledged to donate an additional one hundred and fifty (150) cashew seedlings to Nyimati Basic School once the seedlings in the association's nursery are ready for transplanting.

The exercise reinforced the importance of environmental stewardship and inspired pupils to play an active role in protecting Ghana's natural environment for future generations.
