NCCE SISSALA WEST STRENGTHENS WOMEN’S ROLE IN THE FIGHT AGAINST CORRUPTION

The Sissala West District Office of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) has organised a follow-up civic engagement programme for women’s groups to strengthen their understanding of the rule of law and empower them to play an active role in combating corruption within their communities. Held on 29 September 2026, the engagement was organised in partnership with GIZ, with funding from the European Union, as part of efforts to promote transparency, accountability and responsible citizenship.

Building on an earlier engagement held on 23 October 2025, the programme provided an opportunity for participants to reflect on how they had applied the knowledge acquired, assess the progress made, and share challenges encountered in addressing corrupt practices. The session was facilitated by the Sissala West District Director of the NCCE, Mr. Mustapha Iddrisu, and an Assistant Civic Education Officer, Ms. Nasare Alhassan.

Through interactive discussions, participants explored the principles of the rule of law and examined some of the barriers that hinder individuals from identifying, challenging, and reporting corrupt practices. The women also shared personal experiences and practical ideas on overcoming these challenges, highlighting the importance of collective action in promoting integrity and accountability within their communities.

Addressing the participants, Mr. Iddrisu encouraged the women to serve as peer educators by extending the knowledge acquired to other women within their associations, families and communities. He underscored the important role women play in shaping attitudes, promoting ethical behaviour and influencing positive change at the community level. He further reaffirmed the Commission’s commitment to working with women and other community groups to strengthen public understanding of the rule of law, transparency and accountability in the fight against corruption.

The Assistant Coordinating Director of the Sissala West District Assembly, Mr. Timothy Sukpeni, commended the participants for the level of knowledge demonstrated during the engagement. He expressed appreciation to the NCCE, GIZ and the European Union for their contributions towards the initiative and encouraged the women to remain vocal in challenging corrupt practices. Mr. Sukpeni also urged them to make use of the Assembly’s Public Relations and Complaints Committee to register grievances whenever they had concerns about the Assembly's operations or service delivery.

Demonstrating their willingness to extend the impact of the engagement beyond the immediate participants, the women appealed to the NCCE District Directorate to facilitate airtime on a local FM radio station. They explained that such a platform would enable them to share their knowledge and experiences with a wider audience, particularly women in communities outside the district capital who may not have had the opportunity to participate in the programme.

The engagement concluded with participants expressing renewed commitment to applying the knowledge acquired and encouraging others to uphold integrity, demand accountability and respect the rule of law. Their request for a radio platform also reflected a growing interest in taking civic education beyond organised engagements and making the fight against corruption a shared responsibility at the community level.
