NCCE-Sissala West Joins Residents to Promote Clean and Healthy Communities

A clean community does not happen by chance; it takes the collective effort of citizens and institutions to keep public spaces safe and healthy. In line with this, the Sissala West District Office of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) joined the Sissala West District Assembly, other institutions, and residents of Gwollu for the maiden National Sanitation Day clean-up exercise.

Ahead of the exercise, NCCE officers conducted public education to engage residents along the streets of Gwollu and surrounding communities on proper waste management, good sanitation practices and the importance of citizens’ participation in national clean-up exercises.

The education formed part of the Commission’s efforts to encourage citizens to take ownership of their communities and recognize sanitation as a shared responsibility.

During the clean-up exercise, participants cleared refuse, gutters and desilted major drains across the Gwollu township. The exercise also covered key public facilities, including the premises of the District Police Headquarters, Gwollu Ambulance Service, Ghana National Fire Service Station, Gwollu Hospital, Gwollu Chief’s Palace and the Gwollu Market Centre.

Residents were further educated on proper waste disposal and hygiene practices to help reduce sanitation-related diseases such as typhoid fever, cholera, malaria and diarrhoea.

The exercise brought together staff of the Gwollu Hospital and Ghana Health Service, District Assembly officials, Assembly Members, Ghana Education Service, officers of the Military Command, Ghana National Fire Service, Ghana Police Service, Ghana Immigration Service, Ghana National Ambulance Service, youth groups and community members.

The District Chief Executive, Presiding Member, District Coordinating Director, Medical Doctor of Gwollu Hospital, District Director of the NCCE and District Commanders of the Ghana Police Service, Military, Ghana Immigration Service, Ghana National Fire Service and Ghana National Ambulance Service were among the dignitaries present.

The participation of the NCCE in the exercise underscores the Commission’s commitment to promoting responsible citizenship and encouraging citizens to play an active role in addressing issues that affect the well-being of their communities.

The exercise also served as a reminder that maintaining a clean environment goes beyond periodic clean-up activities and requires consistent, responsible waste management and active community participation.
