The Essikado-Ketan Sub-Metro Office of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) in the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis has sensitized pupils of Western Goshen International School at Kojokrom in the Western Region on fundamental human rights and civic responsibilities.
The sensitization program formed part of the Commission’s ongoing efforts to promote civic awareness among young people and equip them with knowledge of their rights and responsibilities as children.
The engagement was led by Ms. Mavis Amoakohene, Assistant Director, and Mr. Solomon Ofosu, Civic Education Officer.
The resource persons educated the pupils on various constitutional rights, including the right to education, dignity, healthcare, and protection. They also highlighted the responsibilities of children, including discipline, respect for others, and the protection of public property.
The pupils actively participated in the discussion by sharing examples of situations in which their rights had either been respected or violated in their communities. Although the pupils demonstrated considerable awareness of their fundamental rights, the facilitators observed that they had limited knowledge of their civic responsibilities.
The resource persons therefore encouraged the pupils to understand that enjoying their rights also comes with corresponding responsibilities towards their families, communities and the nation.
As part of the engagement, the pupils were also informed about an upcoming educational excursion to the Parliament House and the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park and Mausoleum in Accra.
According to the resource persons, the excursion would provide the pupils with practical knowledge of Ghana’s democratic processes, the role of Parliament, and the importance of civic responsibility. It would also expose them to aspects of Ghana’s history, particularly the life and legacy of Ghana’s first President, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.
