The Amansie West Directorate of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) has engaged members of the Dressmakers and Tailors Association at Antoakrom on the importance of responsible citizenship and tax compliance, encouraging small business operators to recognise their contributions to national development through the fulfilment of their civic obligations.
Organised as part of the Commission’s continuous public education efforts, the engagement sought to deepen participants’ understanding of their constitutional responsibilities, particularly the need to honour tax obligations and adopt responsible business practices that contribute to the development of their communities and the nation.
Addressing participants on the topic, “Responsible Citizenship and Tax Compliance”, a Senior Civic Education Officer, Mr. Stephen Agyei, explained that citizenship goes beyond enjoying the rights and freedoms guaranteed by the 1992 Constitution. He emphasised that citizens also have a responsibility to fulfil their constitutional duties, obey the laws of the country and contribute meaningfully to national development.
Highlighting the importance of taxation, Mr. Agyei explained that taxes constitute a critical source of government revenue for financing essential public services and infrastructure, including education, healthcare, roads, sanitation and other development projects. He encouraged members of the association to appreciate the relationship between tax compliance and national development, stressing that the collective fulfilment of tax obligations contributes to the provision of services that benefit society.
Beyond paying taxes, Mr. Agyei urged participants to maintain proper business records and seek clarification from the appropriate institutions whenever they were uncertain about their tax responsibilities. He further reminded them that responsible citizenship requires respect for the rights of others, adherence to the laws of Ghana, and active participation in community development. Members were consequently encouraged to apply the knowledge acquired and share it with other business operators and members of their communities.
Participants also had the opportunity to raise concerns, ask questions, and share their experiences regarding taxation, civic responsibilities, and the challenges confronting small business operators. The interactive discussion provided a platform for members of the association to seek clarification on their obligations while reflecting on their roles as stakeholders in community and national development.
Through the engagement, the NCCE Amansie West Directorate reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening constitutional awareness and promoting responsible citizenship among identifiable groups and associations across the district. The initiative also underscored the importance of continuous civic education in encouraging citizens to fulfil their obligations and participate actively in the development of their communities.
