NCCE NORTH GONJA DISTRICT MARKS CITIZENSHIP WEEK 2026 WITH SCHOOL OUTREACH PROGRAMME

The National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), North Gonja District Directorate, has successfully commemorated Citizenship Week 2026 through a series of educational outreach programmes in selected basic schools across the district.

The celebration, held on 9th June 2026, formed part of the nationwide Citizenship Week activities organized by the Commission under the theme, “Upholding Our Constitution in the Digital Age: Our Collective Responsibility.”

As part of the exercise, NCCE officials visited several schools, including Pentecost JHS, Daboya Girls Model School, Tarbiat JHS, and other educational institutions within the district. The outreach sought to educate students on the relevance of the 1992 Constitution, their civic responsibilities as citizens, and the importance of responsible digital citizenship in today's technology-driven world.

During the engagements, students were taken through discussions on the Constitution as the supreme law of Ghana and the foundation of the country’s democratic governance. Facilitators explained that every citizen, regardless of age, has a role to play in protecting and upholding the principles and values enshrined in the Constitution.

The programme also focused significantly on digital citizenship, emphasizing the opportunities and challenges associated with social media and other online platforms. Students were educated on the dangers of misinformation, disinformation, cyberbullying, and hate speech, and were encouraged to think critically before sharing information online.

According to the facilitators, the rapid growth of digital technology has made it easier for false information to spread, making it essential for young people to verify information from credible sources before forwarding or reposting content. They noted that responsible online behavior contributes to national cohesion, peaceful coexistence, and democratic development.

Furthermore, participants were encouraged to use digital platforms positively by promoting messages of peace, tolerance, respect, and national unity. Students were reminded that while digital technology provides opportunities for learning, innovation, and communication, it also comes with responsibilities that must be exercised with caution and integrity.

The outreach sessions were highly interactive, with students actively participating in discussions and asking questions on constitutional governance, citizens’ rights and responsibilities, and the responsible use of social media. The interactive nature of the programme enabled participants to gain a deeper understanding of the topics discussed and allowed facilitators to address concerns and misconceptions.

The NCCE also used the occasion to encourage students to cultivate values such as patriotism, discipline, respect for the rule of law, and active participation in community development. They were reminded that they are future leaders whose actions can positively influence society both online and offline.
