NCCE engaged Women on the Rule of Law and the fight against Corruption with support from GIZ and EU.

National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), Assin Foso, has engaged women in a sensitisation forum on the Rule of Law and the fight against corruption.

The forum, held on September 16, 2026, brought together women’s groups, market women, members of the Artisans Association and women leaders from faith-based organisations. It formed part of the NCCE’s efforts to empower citizens, particularly women, with knowledge of their rights and responsibilities while encouraging them to play active roles in promoting accountability and justice.

Speaking at the forum, Mr. Kevin Aidoo of the Legal Aid Commission took participants through the practical application of the Rule of Law and encouraged them to develop the confidence to report suspected acts of corruption.

He explained that the Rule of Law requires individuals and institutions to operate within the law and stressed the importance of citizens knowing their rights and seeking appropriate assistance when those rights are violated.

Mr. Aidoo also informed the participants that the Legal Aid Commission provides free legal services to members of the public who are unable to afford the services of a lawyer, encouraging those who require legal assistance to take advantage of the service.

For her part, ASP Rosemond Duncan, District Crime Officer and representative of the Ghana Police Service, educated the women on procedures for reporting suspected criminal activities and corruption.

She noted that corruption-related concerns could also arise in everyday transactions within communities. Using land acquisition in Assin Foso as an example, she cautioned residents to be careful when purchasing land and to properly document their transactions.

ASP Duncan advised land buyers to insist on receiving receipts and other relevant documentation after making payments, regardless of their relationship or familiarity with the person selling the land.

Adding to the discussion, former Municipal Director of the NCCE, Mr. Paul Tetteh, explained that Ghana has several laws that govern the conduct of individuals and institutions, noting that the Rule of Law, in simple terms, means obeying the law.

He stressed that corruption should not be viewed as a problem involving only public officials, as it can occur in different parts of society.

Mr. Tetteh cited situations such as the sale of the same piece of land to different people as an example of dishonest practices that can create disputes and undermine trust within communities. He therefore urged participants to ensure that their transactions were properly documented to protect themselves from potential disputes. The forum was highly interactive, with participants sharing personal experiences, asking questions and discussing practical steps they could take to prevent and report corruption in their communities.

The engagement was the second NCCE forum with women in Assin Foso on corruption, providing an opportunity to build on discussions from the previous session and deepen participants’ understanding of accountability and the Rule of Law.

The forum also carried a poignant moment as the Queen Mother of the Assin Foso Market, who had participated in the first engagement, was absent following her passing.

At the close of the programme, Madam Dora Tetteh, a women’s leader of The Church of Pentecost, English Assembly, expressed appreciation to the NCCE for organizing the forum and providing women with practical civic education on the Rule of Law and corruption.

The NCCE encouraged the participants to share the knowledge gained with other women and community members and to contribute to building a society where citizens understand their rights, obey the law and confidently speak up against corruption.
