The Ekumfi District Office of the National Commission for Civic Education has engaged drivers, commuters, passengers, and market women at the Ekumfi-Essuehyia Market and lorry station as part of efforts to promote tax compliance and responsible citizenship.
The public education exercise, held on Wednesday, 20th May 2026, focused on the theme, “Tax Compliance.” It aimed to deepen citizens’ understanding of the importance of paying taxes to support revenue generation, local development, and national growth.
Using a vehicle public address system, officials of the Commission moved through the market and lorry station to educate members of the public on their civic responsibility to honour their taxes. The team explained that taxes remain one of the major sources of public revenue and are essential for the provision of roads, schools, health facilities, sanitation services, security, and other social amenities.
The education also highlighted some key taxes and levies citizens are expected to pay, including property rates, building permits, and vehicle income tax. Participants were reminded that timely payment enables the District Assembly to mobilise the resources needed to improve service delivery and undertake development projects within the district.
The NCCE team further drew attention to Article 41(j) of the 1992 Constitution of Ghana, which enjoins every citizen to declare their income honestly to the appropriate and lawful agencies and to satisfy all tax obligations. They stressed that tax payment is not only a legal requirement but also a civic duty that enables citizens to contribute meaningfully to national development.
The engagement attracted the attention of drivers, traders, passengers, and other members of the public, many of whom sought further clarification on their tax responsibilities and the need for prompt payment. Some participants expressed appreciation to the NCCE for bringing the education to their workplace and community spaces.
Participants were encouraged to view tax payment as a shared civic responsibility and a practical way of contributing to community and national progress. They were urged to comply with tax laws, make timely payments, and support efforts to raise the resources needed for improved public services and development projects.
