NCCE Educates Tumu Girls’ Model JHS Pupils on Gender-Based Violenc

The National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) has intensified efforts to promote awareness of Gender-Based Violence (GBV) by educating pupils of Tumu Girls' Model Junior High School on the causes, forms, and prevention of the social menace.

The sensitization session was led by the Municipal Director of the NCCE, Mr. Hussein Elyasu, who explained that the concept of gender goes beyond the biological differences between males and females. He noted that it also encompasses the socially assigned roles and responsibilities of men and women, which can sometimes contribute to unequal treatment and discrimination.

During the engagement, Mr. Elyasu emphasized that although both males and females can experience Gender-Based Violence, statistics from the Domestic Violence and Victims Support Unit (DOVVSU) indicate that women and girls are disproportionately affected. He therefore urged the pupils to be vigilant and informed about the various forms of abuse.

He further highlighted several factors that contribute to GBV, including weak enforcement of laws, harmful customary practices, child marriage, poor communication between married couples, and issues relating to sexual orientation. According to him, addressing these underlying causes is essential to reducing the prevalence of violence in society.

Mr. Elyasu also educated the pupils on the various forms of Gender-Based Violence, including female genital mutilation, rape, defilement, sexual harassment, and harmful widowhood rites. He cautioned the pupils, particularly the girls, to be alert and take steps to protect themselves against rape, defilement, and sexual harassment, noting that they could become targets if adequate precautions are not taken.

The engagement concluded with a call on the pupils to speak up against all forms of abuse, report incidents to the appropriate authorities, and contribute to creating a safe and respectful environment for everyone.
