The Western Regional Office of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) has advised Ghanaians to exercise caution when saving the contact details of their spouses and other close relatives on their mobile phones to prevent cyber fraud and identity theft.
The advice was given during an engagement with officers and personnel of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) – Customs Division as part of activities marking the 2026 Constitution Week Celebration on 5th May 2026.
Speaking on the theme, “Upholding Our Constitution in the Digital Age: Our Collective Responsibility,” the Western Regional Director of the NCCE, Mr. Andrews Ofori Larbi, noted that while digital technology offers numerous benefits, its misuse poses a threat to Ghana’s democracy and national security. He explained that saving contacts with identifiable names such as “My Lovely Wife” or similar descriptions could expose individuals and their families to fraudsters if their phones are stolen, lost, or compromised.
Participants shared experiences highlighting how cybercriminals can exploit information obtained from stolen or hacked phones to access sensitive data, including One-Time Passwords (OTPs), which may be used to gain unauthorized access to financial accounts and other digital platforms.
Contributing to the discussion, the Western Regional Sector Commander, Mr. Walter Blankson, emphasized the importance of adhering to the legal framework governing cybersecurity in Ghana, particularly the Cybersecurity Act, 2020 (Act 1038) . He urged participants to remain vigilant and adopt safe digital practices to protect themselves and their personal information.
The program benefited a total of 170 participants, comprising 126 males and 44 females.
The engagement formed part of the NCCE’s efforts to promote responsible digital citizenship and encourage citizens to uphold constitutional values in an increasingly digital society.
