NCCE Educates Ga South Students on Fake News and Responsible Social Media Use

The Ga South Municipal Directorate of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) has educated learners of Ngleshie Amanfro Technical Institute, Mawuko International School, and Sky Grace International School on the dangers associated with fake news, misinformation, and impersonation on social media.

The educational program formed part of activities marking this year’s Citizenship Week Celebration, aimed at promoting responsible citizenship and positive digital behavior among students.

During the sensitization sessions, resource persons Dan Abonyi Yamoah and Rita Dzifa Aklinu advised learners to be cautious about the kind of information they share online and encouraged them to always verify information before forwarding or posting it on social media platforms.

Giving examples of fake news, the resource persons explained that a person could falsely report a fire outbreak in a community online, causing officers from the Ghana National Fire Service to rush to the scene only to realize there was no fire incident. According to them, such false alarms waste time and resources and may cause officers to treat future reports lightly. They stressed that when a real emergency eventually occurs, delays in responding could lead to the loss of lives and destruction of property.

The learners were also cautioned against creating fake social media accounts to impersonate others, stressing that such acts could damage reputations and negatively affect future opportunities such as employment, leadership positions, and international travel.

They further encouraged the students to always uphold the 1992 Constitution in all their activities and project Ghana positively to the world through responsible online behavior.

Students were also urged to use the internet responsibly, uphold discipline and respect online, and become good digital citizens who contribute positively to national development.

The program forms part of the NCCE’s mandate to promote civic responsibility, patriotism, and good citizenship values among the youth in the Ga South Municipality.
