As part of activities marking this year’s Citizenship Week Celebration, the Ledzokuku Municipal Office of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) has facilitated an educational excursion to the Parliament House of Ghana for students of Roosevelt International School located at Spintex.
Led by Municipal Director Nicholas Atiogbe and supported by a Senior Civic Education Officer, Gifty Amedzro, the initiative is part of the Commission’s ongoing efforts to engage schools and provide young people with firsthand knowledge of Ghana’s democratic institutions.
A highlight of the visit was an interactive session with the Member of Parliament for the Ledzokuku Constituency, Hon. Benjamin Ayiku. He explained the composition and functions of Parliament, the roles of the Majority and Minority caucuses, and the law-making process.
He also emphasised Parliament’s oversight responsibility in safeguarding democracy, while educating the students on symbols of authority, seating arrangements, and the conduct expected of citizens during proceedings on the floor of Parliament.
Hon. Ayiku further encouraged the pupils to take an interest in governance, pursue knowledge diligently, and aspire to contribute meaningfully to national development.
The excursion offered the students practical exposure to how laws are made and government business is conducted, deepening their understanding of democratic governance beyond the classroom. It also strengthened their sense of civic responsibility, provided direct interaction with their elected representative, and inspired interest in leadership and national affairs.
The Municipal Office of the Commission expressed gratitude to Hon. Ayiku for his support, noting that the exercise achieved its purpose of bringing civic education to life for the students.
