Hon. Mahama Ayariga Engages NCCE, GBC to Boost Citizen Participation in Local Governance

The Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Hon. Mahama Ayariga, has engaged the management of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), led by Ms. Kathleen Addy, and the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) to discuss the roll-out of a programme aimed at deepening popular participation and accountability in Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs).

The Ministry will collaborate with the NCCE and the GBC to provide live coverage of General Assembly and Town Hall meetings at the MMDAs, consistent with Sections 40, 41, 42, 45, 46 and 47 of the Local Governance Act, 2016 (Act 936). The initiative will further deepen citizen-government engagements and enhance accountability at those government tiers.

Hon. Mahama Ayariga gave the assurance that in the coming days, the Ministry will provide the necessary logistics to NCCE and GBC to enable them to undertake this assignment, which is expected to whip up public interest in the upcoming District Level Elections and encourage citizen participation in local governance and decentralisation processes.
