FOLOW - UP DISCUSSION ON WOMEN ENGAGEMENT ON ANTI - CORRUPTION, RULE OF LAW AND ACCOUNTABILITY

The National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) in the Tano North Municipal, with support from the Deutsche Gesellschaft fur International Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), organised a follow-up engagement on Anti-corruption and accountability for women's groups at Duayaw Nkwanta at S.K. Memorial Antwi (Pentecost Church).

The program was a follow-up to earlier engagement under the GIZ support to the Rule of Law and Anti-Corruption Reforms programme aimed at empowering women to understand, resist and report corrupt practices and promote transparency and accountability in public delivery at the local level. The engagement brought together women leaders, market women, hairdressers, traders and faith-based women groups to deepen their knowledge on the effects of corruption on national development in fighting corruption.

Mr Joseph Oduro-Buabeng (Municipal Director of NCCE) disclosed that Ghana loses over GHC 12 million through corruption, hence the need to come together to fight and bring the menace to the least minimum. Mr Victor Osei, Director at CHRAJ, also mentioned that women need greater empowerment to enable them to play active roles to help fight the wrong in society. The consensus presented by women was that corruption was so endemic in Ghanaian society that greater efforts must be made by all stakeholders to arrest the situation

The participants appealed to the government to adequately resource state institutions and law enforcement agencies to make corruption unattractive to the citizens.
