Fanteakwa South NCCE Introduces Kwampaw Pupils to Local Governance During Constitution Week

The Fanteakwa South District Directorate of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), together with pupils of Kwampaw Preparatory School, has paid a courtesy call on the Fanteakwa South District Assembly as part of activities marking Constitution Week 2026.

The visit took place at Osino in the Eastern Region on May 5, 2026, and was aimed at strengthening collaboration between the NCCE and stakeholders in the district’s governance system, while providing pupils with practical exposure to local government operations, constitutional democracy, and the role of citizens in promoting accountable governance.

The delegation was received by the District Coordinating Director, Mr. Emmanuel Asamoah, who welcomed the initiative and commended the NCCE for promoting civic education among young people. He stressed the importance of upholding the rule of law and fighting corruption to ensure sustainable development in the district.

Mr. Asamoah also educated the pupils on the structure and functions of the District Assembly, describing it as the highest political and administrative authority at the local level. He explained that the Assembly is responsible for development planning, service delivery, revenue mobilization, and policy implementation, all of which directly affect the welfare of citizens in the district.

He encouraged citizens, especially the youth, to take an active interest in local governance, participate in community development, and demand accountability from public officials. According to him, democratic governance becomes stronger when citizens understand their rights, perform their responsibilities, and remain vigilant in protecting public resources.

Speaking during the visit, the District Director of the NCCE, Mr. Kwadwo Adu-Asare, urged the pupils to become ambassadors against corruption by promoting integrity, honesty, and respect for the Constitution in their schools and communities. He noted that exposing learners to governance institutions at an early stage helps build a culture of accountability and prepares young citizens to participate meaningfully in Ghana’s democratic processes.

The educational tour gave many of the pupils their first direct interaction with a major government institution and helped them understand how local governance decisions affect their daily lives. It also offered them an opportunity to appreciate the role of the District Assembly in development and the need for citizens to support democratic institutions.

The programme formed part of the NCCE’s broader Constitution Week activities aimed at deepening public appreciation of Ghana’s 1992 Constitution and democratic values. Citizens were encouraged to uphold the rule of law, reject corruption, protect public property, and contribute actively to the development of their communities.

The NCCE Fanteakwa South District Directorate expressed appreciation to the Fanteakwa South District Assembly and Kwampaw Preparatory School for their support of the civic education initiative.
