The Juaboso District Director of the NCCE sensitized the populace of Juaboso and its environs on Decentralization and Local Government.
Mr. Stephen Tikoli, District Director, took the populace through the history of Local governance from pre-colonization up to date.
The populace were reminded that before the coming of the Europeans, Local governance was practised through the Chiefs, sub-chiefs, and family heads.
The Europeans also introduced the system of indirect rule as a way to practice Decentralization and Local governance.
After independence, the 1957 Constitution of Ghana also divided the country into 5 administrative regions- Western, Eastern, Ashanti, Northern, and Trans-Volta-Togo- to enhance the practice of Local governance
Again, the populace were briefed on Acts 54 of 1960, 359-1974, PNDC Law 207-1988 (that created 110 MMDAs), and Act 462-1993, all led to the build-up of the current Decentralization and Local governance system as practiced in Ghana.
He encouraged the populace to take part in the governance process at the District Assembly Level.
He reminded the populace that Decentralization and local government create a framework for Citizens' participation in decision-making at the local level.
Chapter 20 of the 1992 Constitution and Act 936-2016 were used for the Activity.
After the education, the populace were allowed to phone in to seek clarification, make contributions and to ask questions.
The activity received positive feedback from the populace, as listeners were able to take part in the sensitization process.
The topic will be continued hopefully next week on the same platform.
