Citizenship Week Celebration: NCCE Abuakwa South Engages Students on Responsible Digital Citizenship

As part of the 2026 Annual Citizenship Week Celebration, the Abuakwa South Municipal Office of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) organized a civic engagement for students from Apedwa Methodist Primary and JHS, SDA JHS, M/A Primary and JHS, Presbyterian Primary and JHS, and R/C JHS.

The programme was held on 17th June 2026 at the Apedwa Presbyterian Church Hall under the theme, “Upholding Our Constitution in the Digital Age: Our Collective Responsibility.” The engagement sought to educate students on responsible digital conduct and the need to uphold constitutional values in their online interactions.

Addressing the students, the Municipal Director, Mr. Eyram Zander, educated them on misinformation and disinformation, explaining that false information may be spread either unintentionally or deliberately to mislead others. He encouraged the students to verify information before sharing it, rely on credible sources, and avoid circulating content that could create fear, confusion, or conflict.

Mr. Zander further reminded the learners that responsible citizenship extends to the digital space. He urged them to use online platforms in ways that promote truth, respect, peace, and national cohesion.

Ms. Oforiwaa Darko, Civic Education Officer, also took the students through a session on cyberbullying. She explained its various forms, its effects on victims, and practical ways students can help prevent it. She advised them to avoid insults, threats, mockery, and the sharing of harmful content online.

She further encouraged students to report incidents of cyberbullying to trusted adults, including parents, teachers, and the appropriate authorities, rather than responding with anger or remaining silent when they or their peers are affected.

The interactive session provided students with the opportunity to ask questions, share their experiences, and reflect on how their online actions can affect others. Participants expressed appreciation to the NCCE for the education and pledged to use digital platforms responsibly.

The programme successfully reinforced the importance of safeguarding constitutional values in the digital space and encouraged students to become responsible digital citizens who promote respect, truth, and positive online behaviour.
