SECOND PHASE OF NCCE CITIZENSHIP WEEK TO FOCUS ON SANITATION

From the 11th to 20th of June, 2018, NCCE will commence the second phase of the 2018 Citizenship Week. The second phase will focus on environmental governance with the theme,

‘The Environment and You’. Resource persons and volunteers will visit over ten thousand (10,000) basic schools across the country, targeting two million (2,000,000) pupils nationwide. The Commission is collaborating with the Environmental Protection Agency, with support from the European Union.

It is important to note that NCCE’s education on the environment stems from the EU’s Accountability, Rule of Law, and Anti-Corruption Programme (ARAP). As part of the ARAP programme, environmental governance is expected to be highlighted to remind all Ghanaians of their Constitutional duty, thus to respect, protect, and safeguard the environment. Article 41 (k).

The NCCE is committed to rolling out a national education on sanitation especially in an era where poor sanitation practices have become the norm. Again, indiscriminate littering of the environment with plastic waste remains a national concern. NCCE’s 2018 Citizenship Week will, therefore, provide a bigger platform for well-meaning Ghanaians, serving as volunteers, to sensitize the citizenry on proper environmental practices for a clean and healthy Ghana.

Citizenship Week will reach out to school pupils to imbibe positive attitudes and behaviours on environmental sanitation for sustainable development. Engaging young citizens on good sanitation practices today will guarantee a clean Ghana’s tomorrow. Ghana must not compromise on its sanitation agenda and the move by the NCCE and EU is one of the many strategies to make the country realize her sanitation agenda. A healthy nation will need a clean environment, workable sanitation systems, and a commitment from citizens to ensure that cities, towns, and communities are clean.
