The Pusiga District Directorate of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) has engaged members of the Patriotic Citizen Association of Gbewa College of Education on the theme "Patriotism: The Role of Teacher Trainees in Nation Building".
The engagement, held on Friday at the auditorium of Gbewa College of Education in Pusiga, brought together student-teachers, college authorities, district officials, and civic education stakeholders to discuss the importance of patriotism and civic responsibility in national development.
The programme sought to rekindle a sense of national pride and civic duty among teacher trainees, equip them with the knowledge to promote patriotism and tolerance in their future classrooms, and strengthen collaboration between the NCCE, the college, and the District Assembly in advancing civic education.
Addressing participants, the Patron of the Patriotic Citizen Association, Dr Akologo Listowel, described patriotism as love for country demonstrated through action rather than words. He urged members to exhibit discipline, honesty, and volunteerism and to serve as positive examples within their communities.
The District Director of NCCE, Mr Yakubu Seidu, took participants through the constitutional values and civic responsibilities of citizens as enshrined in Article 41 of the 1992 Constitution. He emphasised that teachers are nation builders and play a critical role in shaping the attitudes and values of future generations. He encouraged the trainees to instil in their learners a sense of responsibility, respect for national symbols, protection of public property, and adherence to the rule of law.
Mr Seidu further urged the student-teachers to uphold Ghanaian values and demonstrate exemplary conduct both online and offline, noting that patriotism remains a key ingredient for national cohesion and development.
The Vice Principal of Gbewa College of Education, Dr Azuuga Emmanuel Azure, commended the Patriotic Citizen Association for organising the engagement and encouraged the trainees to embody the qualities of punctuality, hard work, integrity, and commitment in their academic and professional lives.
The District Chief Executive for Pusiga, Hon. Aguuri Haruna Erahim, who was the guest of honour, underscored the link between patriotism and national development. He noted that citizens demonstrate patriotism by obeying the law, paying taxes, protecting the environment, and rejecting corruption. He also encouraged the trainees to become ambassadors of peace and civic responsibility during their teaching practice and future careers.
The programme featured interactive discussions that enabled participants to share views on patriotism, civic responsibility, and the role of education in national development.
At the end of the engagement, members of the Patriotic Citizen Association pledged to undertake activities aimed at promoting civic consciousness, including campus clean-up exercises, educational quizzes on Ghana’s history, and civic education outreach programmes in basic schools.
The engagement forms part of NCCE’s efforts to promote patriotism, civic responsibility, and active citizenship among young people as part of the broader agenda of building a united and prosperous Ghana.
