Building informed and peaceful communities requires more than the efforts of one institution. Recognizing the importance of collective action, the Sissala West District Directorate of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) has strengthened its collaboration with security agencies in the district to promote effective civic education and peaceful coexistence.
The District Directorate paid courtesy visits to the Ghana Police Service, Ghana National Fire Service and Ghana Immigration Service in Gwollu, the district capital.
During the visits, the District Director of the NCCE, Mr. Mustapha Iddrisu, outlined some of the key areas covered by the Commission’s civic education engagements. These include fundamental human rights, peacebuilding, security and conflict resolution, the National Anti-Corruption Action Plan, the rule of law, inclusion and participation of marginalized groups, global citizenship, and political and religious tolerance.
Mr Iddrisu noted that civic education was a shared responsibility and stressed the importance of working closely with relevant institutions and stakeholders to effectively deliver the Commission’s mandate.
He explained that collaboration with security agencies was particularly important in promoting an informed, responsible and active citizenry, while also strengthening understanding between security institutions and the communities they serve.
The heads of the security agencies welcomed the engagement and expressed their readiness to collaborate with the NCCE to reach citizens with quality civic education.
Discussions also focused on ways the institutions could work together to promote peaceful coexistence, strengthen relationships between security agencies and community members, and encourage citizens to participate in efforts to prevent violent extremist activities.
The engagement highlighted the importance of strong institutional partnerships in addressing issues that affect community safety, peace and democratic development.
The NCCE reaffirmed its commitment to working with security agencies and other stakeholders to empower citizens with the knowledge and civic values needed to contribute meaningfully to peaceful, inclusive and resilient communities.
