For many young people, the decisions made during their teenage years can shape the opportunities available to them in the future. Against this backdrop, the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) in the North Tongu District has educated pupils on the dangers of teenage pregnancy and child marriage and their impact on education, health and the wider community.
The programme brought together pupils from Manya D/A School, Lasivenu JHS and Battor Methodist JHS, all in Battor, as part of the Commission’s efforts to equip young people with knowledge to make responsible and informed decisions.
The pupils were cautioned against engaging in sexual activities that could result in teenage pregnancy, particularly at a stage when they are still pursuing their education and developing physically and emotionally.
The NCCE explained that teenage pregnancy and child marriage can have serious consequences for both the young person and the child involved. The pupils were taken through some of the challenges associated with teenage pregnancy, including health risks, financial difficulties, social stigma and the possibility of having their education disrupted or brought to an early end.
On child marriage, the pupils were encouraged to speak up whenever they faced pressure or were being forced into early marriage. They were also advised to seek support from trusted adults, including their parents and teachers, whenever they experienced harassment, unwanted advances or other forms of pressure from the opposite sex.
Teachers were encouraged to continue providing guidance and creating a supportive environment where pupils, particularly girls, could freely discuss challenges affecting their education and wellbeing. They were also urged to help pupils understand the consequences of teenage pregnancy and child marriage and encourage them to make choices that protect their future.
The pupils actively participated in the programme and pledged to stay away from sexual activities that could lead to teenage pregnancy. They also committed to sharing the knowledge gained with their friends and families as part of efforts to help reduce teenage pregnancy and child marriage in the district.
The engagement reaffirmed the NCCE’s commitment to empowering young people with civic and social knowledge that enables them to protect their rights, make informed decisions, and contribute to healthier and safer communities.
