The Akuapem North Municipal Directorate of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) has launched the 2026 Annual Citizenship Week in Akropong under the theme: “Growing Up Digital: The Ghanaian Child Upholding the Constitution Online.”
The programme, held on Friday, 25th May 2026 at the Grace Presbyterian Church Auditorium, brought together students and teachers from four selected schools, namely M/A JHS, Salem Presbyterian JHS, Okuapemman JHS, and Presbyterian JHS.
MC for the programme Mr. Eric K. Ocloo (CFO) warmly welcomed the students, teachers, dignitaries, and guests. He highlighted the importance of the Annual Citizenship Week celebration and encouraged participants to actively take part in the discussions and activities throughout the event.
Addressing the gathering, the Municipal Director of the NCCE, Ms. Benedicta Duvor, explained that Citizenship Week is aimed at deepening civic awareness among young people to be patriotic and responsible future citizens of Ghana. She stressed the importance of responsible use of digital platforms, urging students to think critically before sharing information online, respect the rights of others, and contribute positively to digital spaces, as the internet never forgets.
A key highlight of the event was the presence of the Member of Parliament for Akuapem North, Hon. Samuel Awuku, who commended the NCCE in the municipality for organising the Citizenship Week to enable students to understand what citizenship stands for in the 1992 Constitution. He further engaged students on the role of Parliament in Ghana’s democratic system. He encouraged them to take an interest in civic affairs and noted that parliamentary decisions directly affect their daily lives. He also advised them to remain focused, disciplined, and committed to their education in order to achieve their career goals.
To promote digital literacy, the MP announced plans to establish an ultra-modern ICT laboratory in the constituency to equip students with skills in information technology, innovation, and robotics. He also pledged, in collaboration with the NCCE, to organise an educational visit to Parliament House for students to gain first-hand experience of the legislative process.
Other personalities present included the former Municipal Chief Executive for Akuapem North, Lawyer Barima Asiedu Larbi, the Municipal Director of the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ), Mr. Daniel Affum; and NCCE staff Ms. Alberta E. Attippoe (CEO) and Ms. Portia Hlovor (PFO).
