NCCE Kpone Katamanso Educates Public on Gender-Based Violence

The Kpone Katamanso Municipal Director of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), Mr. Seth Sotie, has educated the public on Gender-Based Violence (GBV) during a media engagement on Obonu TV.

The engagement formed part of efforts to raise public awareness about GBV and promote strategic measures to reduce its prevalence in society.

Mr. Sotie explained the difference between sex and gender, noting that sex refers to the biological characteristics of males and females, while gender relates to socially and culturally assigned roles, behaviors and expectations.

He further explained Gender-Based Violence and highlighted its common forms, including physical, sexual, emotional, psychological, and economic abuse. He stressed that GBV constitutes a violation of human rights and can have serious consequences for victims, families and communities.

The Municipal Director encouraged victims and survivors of GBV to speak out, seek appropriate support and report incidents to the relevant authorities. He cautioned against remaining silent because of fear, stigma or societal pressure, noting that silence could allow perpetrators to continue their actions.

Mr. Sotie emphasized that addressing GBV requires collective efforts from individuals, families, traditional and religious leaders, institutions and the wider community.

He called on the public to promote respect, equality, peaceful coexistence and responsible behavior while discouraging harmful cultural practices, stereotypes and attitudes that contribute to violence against individuals.
