NCCE Educates PWDs on Dangers of Misinformation at Apedwa

The Abuakwa South Municipal Office of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) has organized a public engagement for Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) at Apedwa as part of activities marking this year’s Constitution Week Celebration.

The engagement, held on May 11, 2026, sought to educate participants on the dangers of misinformation and disinformation and promote the responsible use of information, particularly on social media platforms.

Addressing participants at the program, the Abuakwa South Municipal Director of the NCCE, Mr. Eyram Zander, emphasized the need for citizens to uphold truth, unity, and responsible communication in society. He noted that misinformation and disinformation continue to pose serious threats to national peace, democracy, and social cohesion, especially during periods of public debate and elections.

Mr. Zander explained that misinformation involves the sharing of false information without the intention to cause harm, while disinformation is the deliberate spread of false information to deceive people. He cautioned that both practices could create fear, confusion, hatred, and mistrust among citizens if not properly addressed.

He advised participants to verify information from credible sources before sharing it on platforms such as WhatsApp, Facebook, and TikTok. He also encouraged them to rely on trusted media outlets and official institutions for accurate information.

“As responsible citizens, we all have a role to play in protecting the peace and stability of our country. We must think carefully before forwarding messages or spreading information we are not sure about,” he stated.

Mr. Zander further explained that Constitution Week is an annual civic education campaign aimed at deepening public understanding of the 1992 Constitution and promoting democratic values among citizens.

Participants expressed appreciation to the NCCE for organizing the engagement and for including Persons with Disabilities in important national discussions. They described the programme as timely and educational, noting that many people unknowingly share false information without fully understanding its consequences.

They further called for continuous public education on misinformation and disinformation within communities to help reduce the spread of fake news and promote peaceful coexistence.
