NCCE Ashanti Regional Directorate Promotes Environmental Stewardship Among Pupils During Environment Month

The National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), Ashanti Regional Directorate, has stepped up its environmental awareness campaign by engaging pupils of Ever Learning Development Centre as part of activities commemorating Environment Month.

The civic education program forms part of a month-long regional campaign aimed at promoting environmental responsibility and active citizenship under the global theme, "Inspired by Nature. For Climate. For Our Future." The initiative seeks to encourage citizens, particularly the younger generation, to adopt environmentally sustainable practices while supporting national efforts to combat climate change and environmental degradation.

Addressing the pupils, the Deputy Regional Director of the NCCE, Miss Akua Zakaria, emphasized that protecting the environment is a shared civic responsibility and not the sole duty of government institutions. She urged the pupils to cultivate environmentally friendly habits such as proper waste disposal, tree planting, conserving water resources, maintaining clean surroundings, and discouraging activities that harm the environment.

Mr. Evans Nunoo, Deputy Director of the Commission, also educated the pupils on the significance of the 2026 World Environment Day theme. He explained that nature provides practical solutions to climate change and stressed the importance of protecting forests, water bodies, and biodiversity to ensure a sustainable future. He encouraged the pupils to become ambassadors for environmental protection by promoting responsible environmental practices within their homes and communities.

The Commission further reminded participants that Article 41(k) of the 1992 Constitution of Ghana places a duty on every citizen to protect and safeguard the environment, making environmental stewardship both a constitutional obligation and a civic responsibility. Pupils were encouraged to support efforts to tackle indiscriminate waste disposal, pollution of water bodies, deforestation, and other environmentally harmful activities that threaten national development.

The engagement also highlighted the connection between environmental conservation and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being), SDG 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation), SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), SDG 13 (Climate Action), and SDG 15 (Life on Land). Pupils were encouraged to recognize that protecting the environment contributes to healthier communities, sustainable livelihoods, and a better future for generations to come.

The program forms part of a series of civic education activities being undertaken by NCCE offices across the country throughout June to commemorate Environment Month and deepen public understanding of environmental protection as an essential aspect of responsible citizenship.

The NCCE reaffirmed its commitment to working with educational institutions, traditional authorities, local communities, and other stakeholders to promote environmental sustainability and inspire collective action toward building a cleaner, greener, and more resilient Ghana.
