The Anloga District Office of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), in partnership with UNFPA and with financial support from Global Affairs Canada, has organised a civic engagement and sensitisation programme for motor riders, artisans, and community members at the Anyanui Market.
The engagement forms part of the project, “Empowering Communities and Youth for Adolescent Health, Gender Equality, and Preventing Gender-Based Violence through Civic Engagement", which seeks to promote adolescent health, Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR), gender equality, and the prevention of Gender-Based Violence (GBV).
The programme brought together motor riders and other community members to discuss the critical role men and boys play in fostering safe, healthy, and inclusive communities. Participants were educated on issues affecting adolescents, including harmful social norms, Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights, and the social and economic consequences of Gender-Based Violence.
Addressing participants, Ms. Afetorgbor Emmanuella Woelikplim stressed that Gender-Based Violence remains a major social challenge with far-reaching effects on individuals, families, and communities. She encouraged participants to become champions of respect, dignity, and equal opportunities for all, regardless of gender.
Ms. Afetorgbor further underscored the importance of engaging men and boys as partners in advancing positive behavioural change and addressing practices that negatively affect adolescent development and well-being. She urged motor riders and artisans to use their influence within their communities to educate their peers, challenge harmful stereotypes, and support efforts aimed at protecting adolescents and other vulnerable groups.
The engagement featured interactive discussions that enabled participants to share experiences and explore practical ways of promoting peaceful coexistence, responsible behaviour, and community accountability. The discussions also strengthened awareness of the need for collective action in addressing social challenges and promoting the welfare of young people.
Ms. Afetorgbor reiterated that sustainable development can only be achieved when communities work together to uphold human rights, promote gender equality, and create safe and supportive environments for adolescents to thrive.
The programme forms part of NCCE’s ongoing efforts to empower communities through civic education and encourage stakeholder participation in promoting adolescent health, gender equality, and the prevention of Gender-Based Violence.
