NCCE LAUNCHES AWARENESS RAISING CAMPAIGN ON DLES AND REFERENDUM IN TAMALE

The National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), Northern Region has launched its regional awareness-raising campaign on District Level Elections (DLEs) and Referendum ahead of the 17th December 2019 elections. The referendum on the proposed amendment of Article 55(3) is to allow for multi-party system into local government and local level elections. The event was held in Tamale, at the Pavilion of the Northern Regional Coordinating Council.

Mr. Samuel Akuamoah, NCCE’s Deputy Chairman in charge of Operations at the launch called on media houses to support the NCCE in its public education campaign. He explained that many Ghanaians are linking the amendment of Article 55(3) of the 1992 Constitution to the election of the MMDCEs which is not the case. He said that citizens will only get the opportunity to elect their MMDCEs if Parliament amends Article 243(1), which gives the President the power to appoint MMDCEs. Mr. Akuamoah urged participants to impress upon their Members of Parliament to expedite action in the amendment of Article 243 (1).

A Commission Member of the NCCE, Mr. Victor Brobbey also said the amendment of Article 55(3) of the 1992 Constitution will enable all political parties to have access to the Executive Arm of Government which will help promote local governance democracy and nation-building.
