Students coached on Constitution game

The Garu District of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), Upper East Region inculcated the values and tenets of the 1992 Constitution in pupils of basic schools through Constitution games as demanded in the Preamble and Chapter 19, Article 233. The game formed part of activities to enhance civic knowledge and promote good citizenship among Ghanaians, especially the youth. The youth-based programme took place at various school premises within the district.

The District Director, Mr Akolgo Samuel, who facilitated the Constitution Game, explained the concept of Civic Education Clubs (CECs) saying it falls within the philosophy of ‘Catch Them Young’ and infused in them the democratic and constitutional culture. He said the game seeks to educate the Ghanaian public, especially the youth in schools, about the Constitution, and it does so in an entertaining way. He stated that NCCE ensures that pupils and students at all levels of Ghana's educational institutions are taught to realize their roles as future leaders and their role in the consolidation of Ghana’s democratic system. He also remarked that students will, in turn, help educate their less privileged parents and others, who have not had the benefit of education, about the 1992 Constitution of Ghana.

Speaking to the students and teachers, Mr. Akolgo mentioned that the programme is aimed at promoting the development of knowledge, skills, attitudes and values needed to bring behavioural change that will enable children to become good citizens. He said the specific objective of the constitution game is:

i.To study the contents/provisions of the Constitution in an entertaining way

ii.To ensure that pupils and students at all levels of Ghana's educational institutions realised their role in consolidating Ghana's democratic system.

iii.To enhance civic knowledge and promote good citizenship among the participants

He said the innovative strategy is to help basic level students learn and know the 1992 Constitution. This will develop future civic thinkers and actors who will not only study the Constitution but act constitutionally to deepen the culture of democracy in Ghana.

The schools visited include: Zaari JHS, Worikambo JHS, Worikambo Catholic JHS and Farfar JHS.
