GENERAL INFORMATION
The local government system based on the District Assemblies (DA) was established under PNDC Law 207 in 1988 and strengthened by the Local Government Act, 1993 (Act 462), now Local Governance Act, 2016 (Act 936).
Every four years, District Assembly and Unit Committee elections are held to elect Assembly and Unit Committee members. The first District Assembly Elections (DLEs) was held in 1988/89, with the most recent District Level Elections held in 2015. Unlike previous DLEs, a National referendum has also been scheduled for the same date to decide whether or not to introduce a multi-partisan local government system in Ghana through the amendment of Article 55(3) of the 1992 Constitution. Over the years, DLEs have recorded low voter turnout with the recent being 39% (2015). There is therefore the need for all citizens and eligible voters to participate actively in this year’s elections since the national referendum constitutionally requires a 40% voter turnout.
What is happening on 17th December, 2019?
The Electoral Commission (EC) will be organising District Level Elections (DLEs) and National Referendum for citizens to vote on the proposed amendment of Article 55(3) of the 1992 Constitution. It will start at 7 am and end at 5 pm on Tuesday, 17th December 2019.
