GCUC WINS MIDDLE ZONAL CHAMPIONSHIP OF THE UNIVERSITY CIVIC CHALLENGE.

The Garden City University College (GCUC) in Kumasi has won the 2019 edition of the Inter-University civic challenge quiz competition for the middle zone. The GCUC had 252 points to beat the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), 139 points, Catholic University College of Ghana (CUCG), 50 points, and Sunyani Technical University (STU) 11 points.

This competition was organised by the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) with support from the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC) at the CUCG campus at Fiapre, near Sunyani, and aimed at creating awareness about the fundamentals and principles of the 1992 constitution as a means to inculcate in the youth the spirit of nationalism and love for the nation.

The questions centred on chieftaincy, land, natural resources, fundamental human rights, the Executive, Judiciary and Legislature.

Addressing the students, Ms. Kathy Addy, the Deputy Chairman in charge of finance and administration, explained that the Constitution was the supreme law of Ghana and provided guidelines that governed the existence and actions of citizenry. She urged the youth to learn to become abreast with the provisions of the constitution to be well-informed of their civic rights and responsibilities as citizens.

Mr. Martin Oti Gyarko, the out-going Deputy Brong-Ahafo Regional Minister expressed concern over the high level of indiscipline among the youth, which was a setback in promoting progressive and flourishing democracy.

Speaking of the Commission’s theme for the year: “Ghana, One People: Our Values, Our Sovereignty in Participatory Democracy, Mr. Gyarko who is the member of Parliament (MP) for Techiman North and Deputy Minister-Designate for the Bono East Region advised Ghanaians to abide by the principles of rule of law to consolidate the gains of the country’s democracy.

Mr. Nishawn Edward Ohene, the Event Officer of the GNPC said the Corporation was determined to support the NCCE to deliver its mandate and called for effective collaboration between the two institutions.
