The National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) has encouraged officers the Ghana Prisons Service to report corrupt practices to the appropriate authorities mandated to handle matters on corruption to help uproot corruption from our society.
Mr. Kojo Tito Voegblorlo, the Commission Secretary of the NCCE, who made the call at the NCCE’s engagement with the Ghana Prisons Service at its Headquarters in Accra, urged Ghanaians to uphold positive values and shun corrupt practices.
The engagement was organised by the NCCE with support from the European Union to discuss issues related to Transparency and Accountability, as part of the 2018 Constitution Week to promote good governance in the country.
According to Mr.Tito, corruption is disturbing cancer which has a devastating effect on the economic advancement of any country, leads to underdevelopment and a bad reputation for a nation. He explained that corruption leads to a lack of basic social amenities such as schools, provision of portable work, hospitals among others, etc.
He appealed to the Prison officers to be volunteers of this year’s NCCE Citizenship Week engagement to remind pupils and students of their responsibilities as active citizens and the role they can play to build a strong, vibrant and democratic Ghana.
Mrs. Joyce Afutu, Director Communication and Corporate Affairs of the NCCE stated that Article 35(8) of the 1992 Constitution of Ghana enjoins the state to eradicate corrupt practices and abuse of power.
She stressed that the 2018 Constitution Week activities sought to draw the attention of Politicians, Public Servants, District and Municipal Assemblies, Traditional Authorities, Youth Groups, NGOs, CSOs, Business Associations, Political Parties and the Media to the need to uphold critical values of governance which include respect for rule of law, demand for accountability and transparency, dedication to duty as well as civic participation in governance, especially at the local level.
She urged Ghanaians to be open in their dealings and have value of integrity in order to make Ghana a better and more conducive for all.
In his closing remarks, Mr. Steven Cofie, Director of Prison in charge of Finance and Administration, lauded that the NCCE for their engagement with officers at the Ghana Prisons Service. He also emphasized that the Whilst Blowing Act must work in order to curb corruption in Ghana.
